Tower Hill – explore a corner of London’s history

Tower Hill offers a taste of London’s history and heritage. Probably best known for the bloody Tudor tales of the Tower a burgeoning and bustling community has built up in the area making it a great place to visit and stay. Clarendon Serviced Apartments offers Part 1 of its guide to Tower Hill.

Eating and Drinking

Tower Hill is one of the most affordable places to visit in London. Independent restaurants cater for every favoured cuisine from Italian to Indian, Japanese, British and French. It is quite common to find average menu prices of around £25 a head which is cost-effective for the capital. However, for those staying in a serviced apartment the opportunity of crafting home-cooked meals in the fully fitted kitchen is a big attraction. There are cheaper recipe ideas to explore so you’re not eating out every night. For a special night out and one you’re unlikely to forget, dive into Tower Hill’s Tudor past with The Medieval Banquet. Mix with sword fighting knights while you drink your mead and tuck into a four course authentic medieval meal. Dressing up is optional.

Tower Hill’s attractions

The thousand year old Tower of London is the most famous attraction in Tower Hill. A formidable presence on London’s skyline the most famous period in its history is that during the reign of Henry VIII and its role in the reformation and execution of two of his queens, most notably Anne Boleyn. Free tours allow an exploration into the tower’s past.

The famous Tower Bridge is another popular attraction which hosts exhibitions and tours to showcase its heritage and place in London’s history.

The Tower isn’t the only attraction nearby; the Design Museum is a world first, delving into design, architecture and fashion founded by the legendary Sir Terence Conran. Close by is Whitechapel Gallery which has earned its position as one of the foremost spaces for contemporary art having welcomed Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Frida Kahlo to the east End. A recent investment has seen it double in size. A short walk away is Spitalfields Market which is a delightful covered market hosting stalls as well as glass covered shops. Food, drink, artisans, quirky clothes retailers as well as jewellery designers and craft makers populate its walkways.

Tower Hill’s walks

London’s a great city to explore on foot and Tower Hill is no exception. The Thames Path Walk links Tower Bridge to Greenwich and Island Gardens. With stunning views, as well as a few riverside pubs to pop in along the route, it is an historic stroll along the riverbank. Pirates were hung along its shores, Turner sat and painted its views, Charles Dickens used it to set his scenes.

Away from the river and perhaps dipping into a bloodier chapter in Tower Hill’s history is the Jack the Ripper Walk. The 19th century butcher stalked the streets of the east End. The walk inspects the murder sites, sifting through the evidence to discover the main suspects. At least it’s one way to get to know the neighbourhood!

A little more family friendly is the Tower Bridge to Westminster Sightseeing Walk. It’s lined with historical and cultural gems from Westminster, the London Eye and the Southbank. There’s a step free route for those doing the walk with a push chair. It takes an hour and covers 4.3km.
