Why stay in Piccadilly Circus?

Often dubbed as one of the most popular destinations in London. Along with Covent Garden, Soho, Leicester Square and Oxford Circus, Piccadilly Circus is known for the famous statue of Eros in its centre and the iconic advertising hoarding. One of the things Piccadilly Circus is known for is its eye-catching array of billboards. It is the first illuminated billboards in London. It has been operating since 1895. It is London’s version of the New York Times Square.

This famed Circus lies at the intersection of 5 primary roads in London: Covent Street, Haymarket, Piccadilly Street, Shaftesbury Avenue and Regent Street. At the end of the 19th century, the prominent fountain in the Circus was installed. The Shaftesbury memorial fountain was made by John Nash.

From Piccadilly Circus, you can easily walk to other parts of the metropolis such as Soho or Regent’s Street. In the Circus, you can take a break from shopping and just experience one of the busiest squares all across London.

Entertainment & Shopping in Piccadilly Circus

When it comes to entertainment and shopping, you’ll never get bored in Piccadilly Circus. When you are in the area, never forget to visit the London Pavilion. It is situated on the northeastern portion of the Circus, on the corner between Coventry Street and Shaftesbury Avenue. Built in 1859, it was used as a music hall. In 1885, a new pavilion was constructed. It also served as a music hall. It underwent various structural alteration. In 1934, it was converted into a cinema and then was rebuilt into a shopping arcade in 1985, while preserving the 1885 facade.

In 1928 to 1929, a department store named Swan & Edgar was built on the west area of the circus. When the department store was closed in the early 1980s, the building has become the flagship store of different music chains such as Zavvi, Virgin Megastore and Tower Records. Its present occupier is The Sting, a clothing brand.

Located on the corner of Lower Regent Street and the Circus is a major retailer of sporting goods named Lillywhites. This famous tourist destination is popular with locals and tourists.
