Hammersmith’s History
One of the most striking districts in London, Hammersmith combines a bustling hub with a sedate riverside view. In fact it is the fourth smallest borough in London. It’s used to welcoming visitors, however. The 1908 Olympics were held at White City after Mount Vesuvius erupted; the games had to be moved from Italy at short notice. The district was also synonymous with the BBC for many years as the corporation has its commercial base there.
Hammersmith Bridge looks and feels like a slice of the capital’s history. In fact it is the first of the real London bridges. Built by Sir Joseph Bazelgette in 1887 it was the first suspension bridge in London and its ornate design only adds to its grandeur.
Hammersmith Walks
There are plenty of walking and cycling routes to explore around the borough. Taking in parks and open spaces – like Ravenscourt or Hammersmith Park – there’s even a suggested walking route around Wormwood Scrubs. Cycle routes incorporate the famous Wood Lane as well as the borough’s three football grounds; Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road, Fulham at Craven Cottage and Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
A popular one mile walking route covers part of the Thames Path over Hammersmith Bridge. Alternatively, travel from this bridge to Putney Bridge or Barnes Bridge which is over two miles.
Transport connections
Whether by road or rail, Hammersmith is well served by transport links. The M4 is nearby which is a useful link in and out of the City. Hammersmith station is served by three lines; Piccadilly, District, Hammersmith and City so travel into and around the capital is easy. It is simple to get to popular and central locations from Hammersmith; it is 5 minutes to Earls Court,11 minutes to Kensington High Street, 11 minutes to Knightsbridge, 15 minutes to Green Park and 21 minutes to Oxford Circus.
