Clarendon Serviced Apartments guide on how to spend a day out in Canary Wharf

If you’re relocating or staying in temporary accommodation in Canary Wharf there’s plenty for you to explore. Clarendon serviced apartments offers a few ideas for a sightseeing day to help you get to know your short term home in The City.

There is enough to see and do in Canary Wharf to make a day out full to bursting. You can dip your toe into the historical sites close to the quayside, choose from a range of fine dining restaurants for lunch then visit some tourist sites in the afternoon. From our serviced apartments in Canary Wharf you’re a short distance from each of these locations. Here is Clarendon’s suggested itinerary.

Start the day at the historic Tower of London. One of the most famous destinations in London, the Tower is probably most famous for its Tudor association, especially as Henry VIII imprisoned and executed his wife Anne Boleyn there. In fact its history stretches back to the Normans and as a medieval stronghold. The Tower, instead of its reputation as a prison was in fact a royal palace. A reminder of that is the fact that the Crown Jewels are safeguarded here, protected by Beefeaters and ravens. From here walk across Tower Bridge and take a picture along the River Thames. You’ll see Big Ben and Westminster from your vantage point.

Take the DLR from Tower gateway to Canary Wharf. London’s skyline is constantly changing so during your journey you’ll see new skyscrapers at West India Quay as well as public gardens creating a peaceful corner in the bustling capital.

Next stop is the restored Cutty Sark. The last surviving tea clipper, and at her height the fastest and most well-known, enjoy a tour and dip into the global maritime history.  Cutty Sark has travelled the world and collected at the museum are articles and memorabilia offering a snapshot of its cultural significance. Walk in the footsteps of those who lived and worked on the Cutty Sark and see where it held its precious cargo as it travelled the seas.

On a maritime theme visit the Old Royal Naval College. The centrepiece at Maritime Greenwich is set in landscaped gardens is open to visitors daily. Explore the Painted Hall, Chapel or just marvel as the glorious baroque architecture. You might recognise the setting; it’s been used as a backdrop and location for various films and TV programmes including Patriot Games, Four Weddings and a Funeral and Spooks.

From the old to the new and the Thames Barrier Park is a signpost of London’s regeneration. The view along the Thames is unparalleled and you can also see the Flood Barrier which stretches across the Thames and protects the capital. The riverside park is green landscape designed to be an urban retreat. Stop for a coffee and let kids loose in the children’s play area.

As the day comes to a close take a ride across the Thames in the UK’s first urban cable car on the Emirates Air Line and enjoy 360 degree views of The City.
