It’s raining, it’s pouring, London’s not snoring

As much as we dream of a glorious, sun kissed summer we have to be realistic. It’s Britain. We may have a few connected days of sunshine but we should also always be prepared for the odd downpour. So while it means we can’t stay in a beer garden or stretch out in the park for long periods while it’s wet we have to have an alternative for days out. Thankfully, London is on hand with plenty of activities undercover.

Here are Clarendon’s top 5 things to do on a rainy day;

Museums

From the Natural History Museum to Tate Modern, The V & A and even the Courthauld Gallery at Somerset House there’s plenty to see in London’s glorious museums. Short term exhibitions or long term collections see some of the jewels and artworks houses in the capital see some treasures up and close.

Go Underwater

We don’t recommend heading into the Thames (although the River cruises do have covered seating) but head to the London Aquarium when the rain is really coming down. Based on the Southbank near the London Eye it offers great views (outside) of Westminster but inside you step into a new world. Sharks, fish and a whole host of underwater creatures are ready for you to get up close to.

Find your new favourite building

There are some open treasures in London that you can explore for free. It could be the Royal Festival Hall, National Theatre, The Royal Opera House or the Barbican but head in and grab a tea or coffee while you enjoy the new surroundings. Arts buildings, often with exhibitions you can see for free, they’re some of the most important institutions for the creative life and soul of London so show your support.

Fantastic pubs

Some of London’s pubs are also some of the city’s oldest buildings, especially in The City and around St Pauls. You’ll find a pub in Blackfriars that is adorned with monks, another down an alleyway that’s been on the same site for 400 years. It isn’t just about grabbing a quick pint of craft ale, oh no. Most of the old pubs combine warm, historic surroundings with a great, tasty lunch. Make the most of a wet afternoon.

See a movie

Don’t just go to the nearest multiplex to catch a film. London’s filled with new and unusual viewing locations. The oldest cinema in the UK just reopened after a refurbishment just off Oxford Road near Covent Garden. The BFI Southbank is the place to go for classic, contemporary or avant-garde films. The Barbican cinema has, and this is official, the comfiest cinema seats in the capital. Meanwhile, for horror fans, the Prince Charles Cinema just off Leicester Square near Covent Garden is a great indy showcase.

If you’re staying at one of Clarendon’s serviced apartments across London never let the rain ruin a day out.
