Explore historic Tower Hill

It’s one of the oldest parts of London and it’s marked by its often bloody history, but for the tourists who flooded into Tower Hill last year for the poppy exhibit, there is so much more to discover. Home to Clarendon Minories and other serviced apartments we show you why Tower Hill is a great place to stay, rich in culture and history.

When archeologists delved underground into Tower Hill they discovered that people lived there as long ago as the Bronze Age. In fact when the Romans moved in the settlement was burnt to the ground by Boudicca.

That bloody past doesn’t stop there. Tower Hill used to be the place for public executions; Thomas Cromwell, Sir Thomas Moore, Anne Boleyn’s brother George through to 18th century executions. The scaffold might have been replaced by a garden monument but it remains a site where crowds would gather in a brutal show of power.

That’s even before we get onto the Tower of London. A medieval palace and fortress the Tower stands tall alongside the River Thames. Dating from 1066 its white tower was built by William the Conqueror. It was a prison from 1100 until 1952. Not only was Anne Boleyn imprisoned here but also the Kray twins.

Culturally the tower is an important location. It’s been an armoury, treasury, home of the Royal Mint and the Crown Jewels. The Tower was the site of the visually evocative Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. Artists Paul Cummins and Tom Piper created 888,246 ceramic poppies to fill the Tower’s moat. Each poppy marked a British military fatality during the war. The poppies were auctioned and raised millions for six service charities.

It’s a great London location to explore. With Tower Hill, Tower Bridge and Aldgate stations nearby, Clarendon Minories, Pepys Street and Savage Gardens is ideally located to provide a base. With one and two bedroom apartments close to London’s financial districts and the Square Mile they are perfectly placed for those looking for a central location for work, either before a relocation or a contract. With so much commerce the streets are filled with plenty of eateries, cafes and restaurants making it a balance between business and pleasure.

Clarendon Minories offers pet friendly accommodation for those looking to stay with their furry friends and the rare opportunity to find a place in central London designed especially for those travelling with pets.
