Around the corner from the famed Charlotte Street in Fitzrovia, Goodge Street is an important destination to have on your “must-visit” list. The south half of Charlotte Street is filled with restaurants and bars. It also has a strong cultural heritage; it was named in honour of Queen Charlotte in 1761. With Clarendon’s accommodation close to Goodge Street in mind we offer the top five places you should visit to eat.
When you think of an Argentinian menu you expect one thing; excellent meat cuts cooked superbly. Gaucho does not disappoint. Its high quality Argentinian beef, Bife de Lomo is its most famous dish. In fact the whole menu is a carnivore’s paradise with a wide selection of grilled meats no offer. The staff at Gaucho offer personal recommendations for which wine to sample with each dish. Complete your dining experience with a delicious dessert. We would recommend the chocolate truffles. For those with an extra sweet tooth don’t miss the Crème Brulee or Macadamia Cheesecake.
2. Pied a Terre
London has a fine mezze of Michelin starred restaurants and Pied a Terre is one of the best. Since it opened in 1991 it has been the go –to places for many when they have a special occasion to celebrate. Its modern European menu is delivered in tasty dishes. Each of its rooms is finely decorated so even the ambience feels like a treat. The seven course tasting menu may be a little expensive but it’s certainly decadent. Delicacies include quail’s egg and asparagus with freshly sourced Cornish crab and a slow cooked veal rump with a bergamot ice cream to finish. There is an A La Carte and lunch menu also available.
Greek food and culture are intertwined in this restaurant and bar which is one of the newest additions to Charlotte Street. There is a wide selection of Greek and Mediterranean dishes on the menu from Meze’s to Souvlakia, Afelia and Steak. Once you’ve finished your meal head down to the exclusive bar to continue on into the night.
For a chilled out and relaxed meal with friends or colleagues nothing beats tapas. For some of the best authentic Spanish tapas look no further than Navarro’s. It helps that the setting is friendly and beautifully decorated with traditional style wrought iron and tiled walls. There are plenty of dishes to choose from, even for pescartarians and vegetarians. With an extensive wine list the ideal drink to go with the meal can be selected. Spanish desserts are creamy and light so our personal choice is the Crema Catalia, a baked custard dessert with a caramelised top.
An American classic menu is having something of a moment in culinary terms. To try something truly tasty and authentic look no further than Bubbledogs. The classic beef hot dog is married with a variety of toppings from sauerkraut to salsa, cream cheese or chilli. There are plenty of sides to choose from including sweet potato fries but our favourite has to be the grower champagne. No caviar here!
Each of these restaurants is just a short stroll from Clarendon’s Cleveland Residences in Goodge Street offering extended stay apartments in the heart of London. Welcome to the neighbourhood!
