The hidden gems of London

Everyone knows where London’s major attractions are; Leicester Square, Madame Tussaud’s, the Tower of London. But what about the gems you don’t know about, or are off the well beaten tourist track? If you’re visiting the capital then be sure to follow Clarendon’s guide to the hidden gems of London.

St Dunstan in the East

This garden is set in the ruins of a Wren Church and is truly secluded in the heart of the city. With ornamental vines and exotic plants, cobbled paths and bright flowers it’s like a treasure trove hidden away. The walls and windows of the ruined church have gradually over time grown into a stage for the plant life. It’s secluded spot means more exotic plants can grow so the Virginia creeper and ornamental vine show off their crimson shades in the autumn. The pineapple-scented Moroccan broom, cytisus battandieri, and the New Zealand flax, phormium both thrive here. Well worth an exploration.

Sir John Soane Museum

No. 13 Lincoln’s Inn Fields was once the home of architect Sir John Soane. Since the 19th century it has been a museum and now library hosting many of Sloane’s drawings and models as well as his collection of paintings and antiquities. A glimpse into the life and taste of an 18th and 19th century gentleman, Soane is most famous for designing the Bank of England’s building. Within his collection there is an Egyptian hieroglyphic sarcophagus, an imitation monk’s parlous and slave’s chains. If you’re planning a visit then mark the first Tuesday of each month; the house is lit by candles and adds a more magical atmosphere to your visit.

Admission is free and there are plenty of activities to keep children inspired and entertained. Close to the River Thames and Richmond Green it’s also a beautiful spot to spend the day.
