It’s one of the biggest companies in the world, so Google’s decision to move its European headquarters to London’s King’s Cross is a huge boost for the area.
The technology giant, whose global HQ is in California, has bought 2.4 acres at King’s Cross, close to St Pancras Station in a £1bn deal to build its UK headquarters there. By 2016 the site will be home to a seven and an eleven story complex. Staff are expected to move from its existing central London offices to the new site.
It’s major news for King’s Cross, a place that is undergoing a huge amount of regeneration. The Eurostar Terminus at St Pancras is a big draw for business travellers as well as tourists and has provided a strong and central connection with Paris, and wider Europe and the capital.
Google’s move will have similar benefits. There’s a strong ambition to create a powerful tech hub in London, big enough to rival Berlin’s. The aim is to create a strong tech community, attracting the biggest and most powerful names to the capital. You don’t get bigger and more powerful than Google.
It also makes a strong statement for investing in London itself. If one of the world’s fastest growing firms, that’s widely regarded as an innovator, says London is the place to be then others will ultimately follow.
